Made from recycled tin cans this sculpture, depicting a heart-shaped Chanel handbag, belongs to the series of works entitled Identity badges. This series by Norman Gekko, examines the contradiction between our desire for individuality and the need to belong. Like much of Gekko's work however, the first impression is misleading. The sharp contrast between the medium used (waste items rejected by consumer society) and the image of the finished product - especially that which is an archetype of luxurious perfection - produces a certain incoherence. This stylistic effect in counterpoint is peculiar to Gekko's work. “Heart-shaped Chanel bag” is a striking example of Gekko’s artistic style. The base materials have been remodelled by hand, shaped rather than cut, and painstakingly painted by hand with the iconic Chanel logo.

We profile Philippa Cullen, an artist active in the 1970s who died at the age of 25, yet created profound dance-based works. Renowned American artist Catherine Opie is having her first Australian survey that depicts love between queer families, Julie Ewington reflects on curating artist interviews, James Lemon takes us inside his stunning Northcote studio, and Kate Just talks about self-care actions like “get therapy” and “make art”.
